Are You Paying for Your Supplier’s Advertising?

It’s been said that with many big brand-name companies, when you buy their products a significant portion of the price is going to pay for their marketing program. If they have large direct marketing campaigns, televisions ads, or heavy print advertising, then it’s probably true. These kind of marketing efforts are very expensive and that money has to come from somewhere, right?

If you think about office supply stores, ask yourself how many television commercials you have seen from them. Print ads? Direct mail pieces in your mailbox every month or every week? Guess who’s paying for that if you buy from these super stores? You are. These days, there are better options. By better, of course, I mean less expensive options – options that save you money.

Let’s take thermal paper rolls, for example. I looked up the price of a 2.25″ roll of thermal paper at one of those super office stores. I won’t say which one, but they also sell “Easy Buttons.” Their price was $19.79 for a ten pack of 80 foot rolls. At the small independent online retailer BuyRolls.com, the same size paper is priced at $23.95. So Buy Rolls cost more? Well, the paper at Buy Rolls was an 85 foot roll, so that’s five feet extra per roll. Oh, and I forgot to mention, that $23.95 wasn’t for a ten pack like you buy at the super office store; it was for a case of 50 rolls. That’s just 47.9 cents per roll at BuyRolls.com compared to $1.97 at the super office store. That’s a savings of more than 75% if you choose the small internet retailer over the super store with the big marketing budget.

The funny thing about this comparison is that both companies are selling virtually identical products, which may, in some cases come from the same factories. The paper rolls from both sources will perform the same way in your POS thermal printer. They’ll feed the same way, print with the same clarity, and even offer similar fade characteristics over time. The only real difference is that you pay much less at BuyRolls.com and you get an extra five feet per roll.

The other difference, of course, is that you won’t see fancy television ads for BuyRolls.com. You won’t get junk mail from them every week. You won’t see their ads in every issue of Barron’s, The Wall Street Journal, or Cosmopolitan Magazine. Oh, and if you need a special battery operated button that says it makes everything “Easy,” you’ll need to go somewhere else. If, on the other hand, you just want good quality thermal paper, bond paper rolls, or printer ribbons for your POS equipment, then BuyRolls.com has just what you need.
